Men’s Health Month: Prioritizing Wellness in June
June is recognized as Men’s Health Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about the health challenges men face and encouraging them to take proactive steps towards better health and wellness. This month-long observance serves as a reminder for men of all ages to prioritize their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
A Personal Perspective: EPluribus Massey Jr.
At 61 years old, my health means more to me than most everything. Therefore, I go the distance and leave no rock unturned. I am no longer the 24-year-old man I used to be, but I do understand that health and well-being are the keys to a more productive and quality lifestyle. Now more than ever, I read scientific studies and learn from leading experts in health and fitness. Do not get me wrong—as a certified fitness expert for over 30 years, an ex-bodybuilder, powerlifter, and trainer of thousands of women and men, I understand fitness at a high level. However, this does not stop me from learning and researching to better my body, spirit, and mental health.
As we age, our bodies deteriorate. The internal organs have taken a pounding minute by minute, day by day, year in and year out for decades. Now more than ever, it’s vital that I do everything I can to gain an edge while this body is dying every second I am breathing. It’s more than how I look; it’s about quality of life now and until the day I die. So, I urge all men to put into practice healthy habits that go beyond vanity.
The Importance of Men’s Health Month
Men’s Health Month is more than just a calendar event; it’s a crucial initiative aimed at addressing the unique health issues that men encounter. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), men are more likely than women to die from heart disease, cancer, unintentional injuries, chronic lower respiratory diseases, and stroke. Additionally, men are less likely to visit healthcare providers regularly, which can lead to the late detection of health issues.
Key Focus Areas
Physical Health:
- Cardiovascular Health: Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in many parts of the world. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and routine health screenings can significantly reduce the risk.
- Cancer Prevention: Prostate, lung, and colorectal cancers are among the most common types affecting men. Early detection through screenings such as prostate exams and colonoscopies can save lives.
- Weight Management: Obesity is linked to several health problems, including diabetes and heart disease. Maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise is crucial.
Mental Health:
- Stress Management: Chronic stress can lead to severe health issues, including heart disease and mental health disorders. Techniques such as meditation, yoga, and regular physical activity can help manage stress.
- Depression and Anxiety: Men are often less likely to seek help for mental health issues due to societal stigma. Encouraging open conversations about mental health and promoting professional help can improve outcomes.
- Substance Abuse: Men are more likely to use alcohol and drugs, which can exacerbate mental health problems and lead to addiction. Seeking support from healthcare providers or support groups is essential.
Preventive Care:
- Regular Check-ups: Annual physicals and routine screenings for blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes can detect potential health issues early.
- Vaccinations: Staying up-to-date with vaccinations, including the flu shot and COVID-19 vaccine, is crucial for preventing illness.
- Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Avoiding smoking, limiting alcohol intake, and eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains can promote long-term health.
Ways to Participate in Men’s Health Month
- Health Screenings: Many organizations offer free or discounted health screenings during June. Take advantage of these opportunities to check your blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose levels, and more.
- Physical Activities: Join or organize events such as fun runs, bike rides, or sports tournaments
